Most visitors to a contractor or local business site are on a phone and want one of three things: to call, to see if you work in their area, or to get a sense of whether you can be trusted. That means a phone number and request button near the top of every page, clear pages for each main service, the towns or counties you cover, real photos of your work, and your license number where it applies.
Speed matters too. A heavy theme, oversized images and too many plugins slow a site down, especially on mobile data. Ask the designer how they test speed and on which devices.
Cost depends on the number of pages, whether the design is custom or built from a template, who writes the copy, how many forms and integrations are needed (booking, CRM, call tracking, payments), and whether existing content has to be moved over from an old site.
Ask for the platform in writing (WordPress, Webflow, Wix, Shopify or custom code), who will host it, and what ongoing fees apply after launch. Get the page list and number of revision rounds in the proposal so you're comparing the same job.
If your current site already brings in calls from Google, a redesign can hurt that if old page addresses disappear. Ask the designer how they'll keep existing URLs or set up 301 redirects, keep page titles and content that rank, and check Search Console after launch.
Ask whether the site will follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, such as readable color contrast, image alt text, keyboard navigation and labeled forms. It helps customers with disabilities and it's simply good practice.
Make sure the domain, hosting account and site files belong to your business, and that you get admin access at launch.
Ask for examples of work for local service businesses like yours and, if possible, a reference you can call. Look at the results they report, not just the design or the pitch.
Get the scope, monthly deliverables, price, term, cancellation terms and reporting in writing. Confirm that your business owns the domain, website, profiles and ad accounts, with the provider added as a user.
Marketing and web work don't require a state contractor license in Florida, so ask about experience and insurance instead. Through Tampa Services, any license and insurance information a provider gives us is on file; verify it yourself before hiring.
A small brochure site can take a few weeks; larger sites with custom features take longer. Delays usually come from content and photos, so gather those early.
Ask for a platform and setup that lets you edit text and photos without a developer, plus a short walkthrough at launch.
If the site is slow, hard to use on a phone or hard to update, a rebuild may make sense. If it works and just looks dated, a refresh can be enough.
