AC Repair vs. Replacement: How to Decide

The questions to ask before you approve a big repair on an older system.

Start with what failed

Some failures are small parts like capacitors, contactors or a clogged drain line. Others, like a failed compressor or a leaking coil, are major. Ask the technician to show you what failed and to write down the repair price.

Look at the system's age and history

An older system that needs frequent repairs, uses R-22 refrigerant, or struggles to keep up may be worth replacing. A newer system with one failed part usually isn't.

Compare apples to apples

If you're quoted a replacement, ask what the repair would cost too. Ask for model numbers, a load calculation and warranty terms in writing so you can compare.
